Avenir Next Rounded was designed by Adrian Frutiger, Akira Kobayashi and published by Linotype. Avenir Next Rounded contains 16 styles and family package options. Avenir Next Rounded contains 16 styles and family package options.

The initial release of the typeface family was increased to 24 fonts: six weights, each with a roman and italic version, in two widths (normal and condensed). Frutiger's numbering system was abandoned in favor of more conventional weight names. The glyph set was expanded to include small caps, text figures, subscript and superscripts, and ligatures.

Two extra font weights (light and thin) were added to the font for the release of Avenir Next W1G, for a total of 32 fonts. This release also added Greek and Cyrillic glyphs in the regular width only.

The current set of weights is therefore ultra light, thin, light, regular, medium, demi bold, bold and heavy, in four styles each (two widths and italics for each width).

Frutiger and Kobayashi began their work on Avenir Next Font by redefining the scale of stem weights. The scale now encompasses six weights beginning with Ultralight and ranging from Regular, Medium, Demi and Bold to Heavy, thereby extending the original Avenir weights on both ends of the spectrum. The simultaneous rearrangement of in-between increments has created a new balance between stem weight harmony and contrast. Applied to the four typeface sets Regular, Italic, Condensed and Condensed Italic, the six weights create a new typographical matrix with a total of 24 fonts.

Avenir was originally released with 6 weights for which Frutiger had carefully selected the increments in line thickness. In typographical practice, however, this proved to be a limiting factor, along with the missing bold weights. Hence, the true potential of Avenir as a contemporary typeface failed to be recognized.
